1. Marta Chantal was born in Guimarães, Portugal.

2. Academic degrees:

- [2011]  PhD in Law (approved by unanimity with ‘distinction’ at Faculty of Law of University of Porto / FDUP). Thesis main subject: ‘Marine Protected Areas: National, European and International legal regimes. Controversies and solutions’ (875 pp.).

- [1995]  Master in European Integration (Faculty of Law of University of Coimbra).

- [1989]  Graduation (Licenciatura) in Law (Faculty of Law of University of Coimbra).

3. Relevant activities:

- [1999-to present]  Assistant Professor of International Law and European Union Law at Faculty of Law of University of Porto.

- [2004-to present]  Member of the CIJE (FDUP); the main topic of research relates to ‘Law of the Sea and Environment’.  

- [2006-to present]  Element of the researcher’s bourse of the Task Group for the Extension of the Portuguese Continental Shelf.

- [since February 2012]  Researcher of the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (University of Porto), coordinating the Marine Environmental Law Research Group.

4. Participation in international projects:

- Cooperation with East-Timor as teacher and as Member of the Scientific Committee for the creation and development of the Faculty of Law of National University of Timor Lorosa’e [2002- to present].

- Portuguese representative in the Working Group on Marine Protected Areas of the European Science Foundation (Marine Board) [2010-2012].

- ‘NETwork of Experts on the legal aspects of MARitime SAFEty and security – MARSAFENET’: COST ACTION; member of the Management Committee [since February 2012].

5. Communications: She actively participated in several domestic and international conferences, symposia or workshops related to 1) the conservation of marine biodiversity (particularly the deep sea ecosystems), 2) the creation of marine protected areas, namely in the continental shelf beyond 200 n.m., 3) fisheries and sustainability, 4)  prospects of evolution of the law of the sea.

6. Publications: To date she has published one book (the Master thesis, 213 pp.) and 16 articles, mainly in the topic of the communications and in Portuguese.

7. Awards: 2010 Gerard J. Mangone Prize, for her article The ‘Rainbow’: The First National Marine Protected Area Proposed Under the High Seas” (The International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, Vol. 25, Issue 2, pp. 183-207). The award was published in IJMCL, Volume 26, Issue 4, 2011, p. 493.

Isabel Sousa Pinto

 

 

Licenciatura by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and PhD by University of California, Santa Bárbara EUA (1994). Associate Professor at the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.

Head of the Laboratory of Coastal Biodiversity (CIIMAR): main research field is biodiversity and ecology of benthic communities, including the role of biodiversity in the functioning and services of the ecosystems, and the effects on these communities of multiple drivers as climate change and invasive species. Another research line is ecophysiology, cultivation and use of seaweeds, and assessments of the effects of exploitation of coastal marine resources. She is leading or participating in several national, bilateral and European projects onbiodiversity research including the creation/development of platforms between researchers and managers/politcy makers to promote research that is relevant biodiversity and to increase the sharing of information and knowledge produced by researchers and managers. Examples of this action is the work of more than 12 years in the EPBRS, several European projects, the Biodiversa Era Net and the work in the promotion of the IPBES “Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services”. She has over 60 publications in ISI journals and books.

Other current positions

Member of the Board of Directors of CIIMAR - Centre of Marine and Environmental Research –Portugal.

Member of the Steering/Executive Committees  of several international and European programs: EPBRS (European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy), the European Network of Excellence MABEFF – Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function, MARS - European Network of Marine Research Institutes and Stations, EUROMARINE – Integration of Marine Networks of Excellence, EMBOS - Development and implementation of a pan-European Marine Biodiversity Observatory System. KNEU - Developing a Knowledge Network for EUropean expertise on biodiversity and ecosystem services to inform policy making and economic sectors. Co-chair of the Working group on Marine Ecosystem Change from GEO BON – Global Earth Observation -  Biodiversity Observation Network.

Representative of the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology in an interministerial panel on Biodiversity chaired by Ministry of Environment and member the Portuguese delegation to the UN Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) since 2006.

Founder (2007) and coordinator of the Portuguese Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Network, founder of the Portuguese Association for Applied Algology. Member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Marine Biodiversity” edited by Springer, Germany and Nature Conservation, Pensoft, Hungary.
